Jeff, a 45-year-old male, visited my acupuncture clinic with numbness, burning, tingling, and a wet feeling on the right side of his foot, persisting for the last 6 months without improvement. His story was like this.
First, he was diagnosed with Lumber spinal stenosis because of pain in his lower back. His doctor recommended surgery to create more space in his lumber. Ever since the surgery, he has experienced numbness, burning, and tingling all the way down to the bottom of his foot, in addition to experiencing lower back pain. Due to his symptoms, he was having trouble sleeping at night, which was really exhausting and frustrating for him. His doctor diagnosed him with peripheral neuropathy in his right foot.

His doctor explained that neuropathy is a condition that occurs when peripheral nerves, which are responsible for sending signals from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body, are damaged. This can result in a variety of symptoms, including numbness, tingling, prickling, burning, and a loss of sensation in the affected areas. Neuropathy can be caused by a number of factors, including diabetes, traumatic injuries, infections, and exposure to toxins.
Nerve damage typically recovers very slowly, with the nerve regenerating about 1mm per day. The duration for symptoms to disappear varies, ranging from weeks to months or even years, depending on the severity of the neuropathy.
In Jeff’s case, he came to my acupuncture clinic within 6 months after his symptoms developed.
There are various therapies available for treating peripheral neuropathy and promoting nerve regeneration. These include medications, scrambler therapy, spinal cord therapy, plasma exchange therapy, physical therapy, and surgery. Acupuncture is also an option for treating peripheral neuropathy. Jeff chose acupuncture after trying steroid injections and physical therapy but not seeing significant improvement from these treatments.
Also, I have created 4 steps for self-care therapy for neuropathy. These steps are recommended to improve blood flow and accelerate the healing process at home. For more details, please visit my other blog post. 4 Steps Of How To Make Foot Neuropathy Better
We'll be happy to answer your questions.
During Jeff’s initial acupuncture session, we examined his foot sensation and muscle weakness in his foot. He had numbness feeling when touching his foot and it is tender to touch. On top of this, he had a pain around her neck and low back. We agreed on a treatment course of Acupuncture once a week for a month.
The treatments focused on reducing the inflammation and restoring nerve regeneration in his foot. Acupuncture has been shown in many studies to be incredibly practical in reducing pain and inflammation due to its ability to stimulate the body to release its natural painkillers.
A week after his first acupuncture treatment, Jeff was showing some progress. He didn’t get much burning feeling or numbness on his foot. By the end of the third week, his burning feeling was almost gone, and he could sleep at night without waking up.
Within three months, Jeff was back to normal. He was nearly 90% recovered regarding the sensation of his foot and no longer needed treatments.
Now, he can run on the treadmill without having any tingling and burning pain.
As a general rule of thumb, the sooner one receives treatment for neuropathy, the better the prognosis. A significant part of Jeff’s success was his consistently receiving treatments for a month.
Some patients come for neuropathy treatment months or even years after the initial onset. These chronic cases are often more complex and take a much greater length of time to achieve results. Even then, recovery is not guaranteed.
Regarding the frequency of treatments, acupuncture follows a simple rule. Acute and relatively new conditions are most effectively treated with more frequent visits. In contrast, chronic and old conditions can benefit from more widespread treatments. In other words, if you just had an onset of neuropathy, you will probably be prescribed 2-3 treatments per week in order to get the most effective results. Chronic cases will generally come in only once a week.
